KS1 GYMKIDS Equipment

GOOD PRACTICE CASE STUDY

GYMKIDS FOR KS1

We have actually found a way of using all the equipment as our new canopied secure area outside our Reception class can accommodate the larger pieces of equipment and are well suited to the smaller children!

Essentially we have 2 systems, at the moment which are successful and let us rotate the equipment periodically:

  1. Semi permanent outdoor, under cover on a safe play surface where the children can now self-select active PE equipment during their self-directed learning times. These are covered/uncovered to look after them each day and the children are trained in their safe use.
  2. During whole school playtimes and when teachers want to give a PE treat: Year 2s get the equipment out each morning playtime along with egg timers. Then the children essentially choose to have a 1 minute non-stop 'blast' on the rower, exercise bike, stepper, etc.

They often line up to have a go as we don't have bikes and play equipment of that nature in the playgrounds. It actually seems good for those children who don't naturally tend towards active team games we have noticed, so I'm sure is raising the participation level of 'target' children. (Naturally sporty types also are keen to have a go!)
