The School Games

The focus of the School Games is to engage and enthuse more young people than ever before to participate in high quality meaningful school competition, supporting them in achieving their own personal best in sport and life.

The School Games aims to do the following;

  • Build on the existing practices both to provide opportunities for those not currently engaged in competitive sport, and provide an appropriate pathway for all young people to achieve their potential.
  • Provide access to a range of alternative, modified and traditional competition formats helping schools offer new and exciting options to young people.
  • Maximise the impact of competitive school sport on young people and schools, in developing personal skills and contributing to school ethos.
  • Offer opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills and express citixenship through volunteer roles such as officials and team managers.
  • Complement other initiatives in schools which encourage a wide range of young people to participate in sport, such as Change4Life sports clubs.

Through four levels of competitive sport, young people have the opportunity to get involved, have fun, challenge themselves, progress and ultimately compete against the ver best talent.

Level 1 - Intra School Competition - Within schools

Level 2 - Inter School Competition - Between schools within SSP area

Level 3 - Annual County Competition - Between winners of Level 2 comps

Level 4 - National Multi Sport Event

The School Games is supported by a newly established network of School Games Organisers (SGOs) and Teacher Release (TR) posts.

The Youth Sport Trust has been commissioned to provide development support to SSPs, schools, NGBs, and other local partners. At the same time schools are offered a range of opportunities to use the escitement and potential of the School Games to drive educational activities, cross-curricular learning, citizenship and improved personal skills.

What Resources are available to schools?

There are a number of resources available to support schools to maximise the impact of the School games.

  • School Games Website - www.yourschoolgames.com Here you will find up to date information, downloadable resources and exchange of best practice. 
  • Schools Guides - guidance document to support primary, secondary, special schools and colleges in delivering the School Games, including NGB guidance and formats.
  • School Games Roadshow - A launch and information giving event, a great opportunity to share information.
  • Teacher Release (TR) post in every secondar school - They will help schools to;
  1. Create sustainable sport competitions, both within and between schools, involving all pupils.
  2. Involve their staff, parents, local pupils and young leaders and volunteers to lead competitive sport.
  3. Engage pupils who are less active or who do not have equal access or opportunity to compete (including pupils with disabilities)
  • School Sport Organising Committees - Schools will be encouraged to establish a School Sport Organising Committee to lead the planning and delivery of the intra school (Level 1) competition programme.
  • School Games Day branding - Available to registered schools to support delivery of their Level 1 School Games Day.

 How is the School Games being coordinated in Norfolk?

Wiothin Norfolk the School Games is being coordinated by a Local Organising Committee (LOC) which is made up of representatives from;

  • Schools (inc Special Schools)
  • School Games Organisers (SGOs)
  • County Sport Partnership (Active Norfolk)
  • National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGBs)
  • Disability Sport
  • Facilities

The role of the LOC and further sub committees is to lead the planning and delivery of a high quality County School Games Festival (Level 3) linked to Levels 1 and 2.

Thanks to lottery funding, the County Sports Partnership for Norfolk, Active Norfolk are supporting the LOC and School Games delivery at Level 3.
